Assessment of corrosion-induced damage in the mechanical contact response of cemented carbides at different length scales

Zheng, Yafeng (Date of defense: 2020-12-11)

Cemented carbides, also referred to as hardmetals, are composite materials consisting of brittle refractory carbide phase (generally WC) embedded in a metallic matrix. Such microstructure leads to an outstanding combination ...

Effect of microstructural and chemical cues on the in vitro cell response to calcium phosphates

Sadowska, Joanna Maria (Date of defense: 2018-07-24)

Bone has a natural ability to regenerate. However, it cannot bridge large defects without the additional help of a supporting material. Among the different synthetic bone grafts, calcium phosphates (CaPs) are excellent ...

A molecular dynamics study of nanocontact plasticity and dislocation avalanches in FCC and BCC crystals

Varillas, Javier (Date of defense: 2019-06-17)

This study aims to investigate the underlying mechanisms which govern the development of dense defect networks in nanoscale crystal plasticity, either under contact and uniaxial loading conditions, with emphasis on the ...

Mechanical and thermal stability of hard nitride coatings

Chen, Yu-Hsiang (Date of defense: 2018-06-12)

Hard coating 's thermal stability is essential due to the high temperature environment of high-speed cutting applications, while the induced phase and microstructure evolution affects the mechanical properties. In this ...

A study of the rheological properties and injectability of calcium phosphate cements : application to minimally invasive surgical procedures and scaffold fabrication for tissue engineering through rapid prototyping

Maazouz, Yassine (Date of defense: 2018-10-15)

The present work addresses two different applications enabled by a specific and useful property of calcium phosphate cements (CPCs): injectability. On the one hand minimally invasive procedures involving the use of CPCs ...

Laser micro-patterning of dental zirconia: effects on microstructure and reliability

Roitero, Erica (Date of defense: 2018-02-22)

Tetragonal polycrystalline zirconia stabilized with 3% mol of yttria (3Y-TZP) is a popular bioceramic, increasingly used for dental applications thanks to its good mechanical properties, biocompatibility and aesthetic ...

Novel functionalized and patterned surfaces for cardiovascular applications

Schieber, Romain (Date of defense: 2017-11-10)

Nowadays, cardiovascular diseases are mainly treated by implantation of a metallic or polymeric mesh, called stent, which maintains the artery widely open. This technique shows very good clinical results, however, it exists ...

Bone regeneration by tuning the drug release from the calcium phosphate scaffolds

Khurana, Kanupriya (Date of defense: 2017-11-10)

Bone is among the most transplanted tissues for regeneration of bone defects, caused by trauma, age-related bone loss or bone infections. Due to their similar characteristics to the mineral phase of bone, calcium phosphates ...

Tuning the biological performance of calcium phosphates through microstructural and chemical modifications

Díez Escudero, Anna (Date of defense: 2017-11-13)

Bone is the most transplanted tissue after blood. As pointed out by the World Health Organization, musculoskeletal diseases can potentially rise as the fourth largest cause of disability within the next years. Unfortunately, ...

Mechanical properties of co-doped zirconia ceramics

Turón Viñas, Miquel (Date of defense: 2018-01-11)

Tetragonal polycrystalline zirconia, commonly stabilised with 3 mol% yttria (3Y-TZP), became one of the most interesting ceramics for biomedical applications due to its biocompatibility and high mechanical properties. Among ...

Preparation and characterization of nanocomposites based on polylactide manufactured by reactive extrusion-calendering : thermal, rheological, mechanical and fracture properties

Bin Raja-Nazri, Raja Nazrul Hakim (Date of defense: 2018-06-01)

PLA nanocomposites sheets that is rnodified with multi-functional epoxide reactive agent (Joncryi4300F, BASF, Germany) were manufacturad using reactive extrusion in a pilot plant. A commercial grade of PLA (PLA 40320, ...
