Abstract

This dissertation explores and compares print media representation of the Spanish female and male cabinet ministers holding different prestige portfolios over an extended period of time (1982 – 2011). The appointment of 143 ministers, 105 men and 38 women, is analyzed. The press corpus consists of 6,081 stories published in the four most widely circulated newspapers in Spain: El País, La Vanguardia, El Mundo and ABC. These newspapers are selected for their circulation size and because they capture news coverage from across the ideological spectrum. The thesis is divided into six chapters. First, the three core concepts of the research are presented: gender, politics, and media. The chapter examines the overall significance of the representation of women politicians in the media. The next chapter deals with the research design. In this chapter the main hypothesis of the research is presented: the media frames female cabinet ministers in a different way to their male colleagues as they are less visible, coverage is more focused on their personal life and they receive a more negative evaluation. The empirical analysis of the research is divided into three chapters. The first one analyzes the first four cabinets of the presidencies of Felipe González (1982), José María Aznar (1996), José Luís Rodríguez Zapatero (2004) and Mariano Rajoy (2011), two Socialist governments and two Conservative governments. This analysis tries to point out the coverage received by female and male cabinet ministers holding different portfolios during the same period of time. The fifth chapter examines the appointment of men and women cabinet ministers from 1982 through 2011. Coverage is analyzed by prestige type, presidency, newspaper and gender of the journalist. Portfolios are divided into highprestige (Defense, Economy, Foreign Affairs, Home Affairs, Vice presidency), medium-prestige (Agriculture, Health, Industry, Justice, Labor, Public Works) and low-prestige (Education, Culture, Environment, Social Welfare, Housing). As women have largely been relegated to low-prestige policy areas, this chapter tries to look at differences in the coverage by type of the portfolio. Chapter six analyzes the coverage of men and women ministers nominated to the Defense portfolio, a “masculine” and high-prestige portfolio. The chapter also examines the coverage of men and women appointed to the low prestige portfolio of Culture, a cabinet post also viewed as “feminine”. The last chapter is devoted to conclusions. It is argued that the analyses confirm the existence of a bias in the representation of Spanish women ministers: women are less likely than men to be quoted in the press; gender of female cabinet members is considered much more relevant; women are more likely to be related to a male mentor; appearance is still important in the coverage of female ministers; female cabinet members are more likely to be related to negative traits in a significant higher percentage than men, and they receive a less positive tone of coverage . This distinct coverage cannot be only attributed to the gender of the female minister but is also linked to the type of portfolio hold by women. The position occupied by women ministers may be important, too: female ministers holding high-prestige portfolios are more visible, their statements are quoted more often, they are more likely to be related to positive traits and also have a lower negative tone.
