Abstract

This research explores the construction of disaffection towards video games among young girls. The project aims to investigate the interactions and the affective/power relationships between mother and daughter within the family circle. Its main objective is to offer an empirical and systematic approach, thus enabling a new way to tackle the video game disaffection phenomenon within social psychology from a performative view of feminine subjectivity. On the basis of the problem statement, this research has been developed through different stages following an ethnographic device that includes a set of interviews conducted with the mothers and the observance of how they play with their daughters. From a hybrid conceptual perspective focused on the role of emotions and affections, the results are arranged in three geometries or analytical maps oriented to explain how disaffection phenomena take place. These maps show the importance of the role of the mothers when constructing gender subjectivity in children. In the current context of a technological society, the video games disaffection background is found in performativity and gender performance. The main theoretical axes giving meaning to the data are based on Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, Foucault’s concept of power relations in their micro-manifestations, Butler’s concept of performativity and Goffman’s concept of performance. The study seeks to determine the concepts and the evidence that proof young girls’ disaffection towards videogames as something natural and obvious. Within the current gender normativity, traditional patriarchal order, customs, beliefs, values and rules are established. Following this normativity, young girls are educated so that they fit into rules, behaviors, attitudes, preferences, feelings, desires, concerns, emotions, strategies, etcetera. Thus, once the norm is internalized, disaffection seems to be spontaneous and natural. Nevertheless, disaffection does not appear out of nowhere. It is shaped and internalized during the process of gender subjectivity. After being established, disaffection performs subjectivity and it is assimilated as a way of being that remains steady later in life. From the narrative-discursive analysis of the corpus obtained during the fieldwork, the results show how young girls’ disaffection towards video games is gradually shaped from the interaction between mothers and daughters. These results are represented in three analytical maps meant to explain how this disaffection phenomenon is constructed from (1) relationships of power and affection (2) activities (3) affective relationships and bodily processes between mother and daughter.
