Abstract

The title refers to the thesis that we are putting forward: that Bolaño is metaphysical and that to actually reach him, he should be read metaphysically. This argument also refers to a second interpretation necessary, essential to the first. In this respect, based on our analysis, this is the view that we must reiterate, i.e.: that literature is metaphysical. Therefore, if literature is metaphysical it is because Bolaño is metaphysical, not inversely, as Roberto Bolaño is above all a writer, but as a writer, and this is the reason, an underlying reason, of this dissertation, Bolaño is above all a poet. Poetry is the actual frontier that combines everything and that paves our way to everything. Bolaño does justice to God from the border because, if not, God would not be justified, in the sense that there would be no justice for God. Thus, the important element is not God but the crimes of Santa Teresa (Ciudad Juárez in the novel 2666). Finally, mysticism and materialism belong reciprocally, hence the mystique of evil and material salvation, that form the border entity from which Bolaño creates his characters. There we see for example the absolute evil and Kierkegaard’s Knight of Faith. Bolaño’s work is a border theodicy when we read it –and we have to read it this way– as the work of a metaphysical Bolaño. The fact of analysing and interpreting appropriately Bolaño’s novel 2666 leads us to formulate and defend the view that Bolaño is metaphysical. To this end, we arrived at a metaphysical Bolaño by reading a number of authors. From this metaphysical ethico-emotional stance Bolaño will formulate all his literary work and form his poetry. Bolaño is not only part of a metaphysical tradition, but he also transforms it. Throughout our thesis we will discuss and develop this transformation. Once Bolaño’s metaphysics is explained and located, we will review Bolaño’s work in order to verify the metaphysics present in his literature, from his first texts to his posthumous publications. At this point there will be a thoughtful aside with the work of 17th Century English poet John Milton, since the issue on which we deepen to ascertain a metaphysical Bolaño is evil. From a reading of Bolaño we revisit Milton, and more specifically, his epic poem Paradise Lost, and then to read 2666 again. The depth and wealth of Bolaño’s work forces us towards this digression, that we classify as Comparative Literature, required to access a cultural and symbolic dimension in an interpretation covering successfully analysing and interpreting 2666 as text and legacy. This interpretation strongly justifies metaphysics in Bolaño or a metaphysical Bolaño. If Bolaño is metaphysical, and this would be our conclusion, it is because literature is metaphysical. Metaphysical literature as such therefore does not exist. The objectives and conclusions of our research are to verify the following: that Bolaño is metaphysical; that literature is metaphysical; that our theodicy is in reality a mundicy; that in the same way that there is a mystic, there is a mystic of evil; that we are frontier beings; that our acts are monadologic; that our states are heterotopic, no longer only dystopian or utopian; and that poets and poetry comes from out in the open, unsheltered, as we are the metaphysical open skies, specifically unsheltered metaphysic, and never from the polis.
