Abstract

In recent years, the significant increase in unions outside marriage has been one of the topics that has attracted the attention of researchers worldwide that study changes in family patterns. In general, the literature shows that the greatest Western expansion of cohabitation occurred during the second half of the twentieth century, a period that coincides with a strong modernization process. The social significance of cohabitation, however, is not the same all over the world. In the European context, cohabitation is considered a manifestation of the loss of the religious and social value of marriage, and is attributed to changing values as presented in the Theory of the Second Demographic Transition. In contrast, in Latin America, cohabitation has for many years been an integral part of the nuptiality system, in that both cohabitation and marriage are common forms of union and family creation. Therefore, cohabitation is socially recognized as a comparable and concrete option along with marriage. This thesis focuses on the investigation of the profile and the trend of cohabitation in Colombia during the last fifty years and examines the implications of changes in union formation with the the family structure process. One of the unique aspects of this research is the use of a very detailed geographical scale for spatial analysis. The results confirm during the period studied, it was in Colombia that one of the largest increases in absolute and relative levels of cohabitation across the continent occurred. While this increase was observed in all social groups and areas of the country, the relative increase was higher among the higher social strata. This pattern contradicts the trend that would have been expected in the context of educational expansion that took place in Latin America beginning in the 1960s. Cohabitation, however, continues to reproduce the pattern of social disadvantage, and its frequency remains higher among less educated populations and among the poorest socioeconomic strata. The results also suggest that the strong sociocultural roots of cohabitation underlie many elements that stem from the colonization of the American continent, the religion, the ethnicity and even the geographical distribution of cohabitation. These findings confirm the impact of history on individual and collective behavior aspects such as the personal choice to cohabitate or to marry, or the way the family configuration that is selected. Moreover, the results also show the association between the choice to cohabitate and long-standing practices or traditions of family formation in Latin America. Households that are extensive or complex, as well as female-headed households or single motherhood are directly related to the intensity of cohabitation.
