Abstract

Over the past years there has been increasing interest in improving initial teacher training in math. In this sense, a great number of studies have focused on establishing teachers’ level of knowledge in relation to particular math contents. More specifically, research has focused on fractions – an essential subject that enables understanding other more complex contents encountered in secondary education, as well as being one of the most difficult math subjects offered in primary education. Within this framework, the aim of this thesis, Pre-Service Elementary Teachers’ Knowledge About Fractions and Their Teaching, is to describe, analyze and interpret the knowledge of fractions students in their first year of a Primary Education degree have – prior to taking any subject in the teaching of mathematics. On one hand, this thesis aims to study their knowledge of fractions and of its teaching; on the other hand, it aims to analyze the relationship between their knowledge of fractions and their knowledge of the teaching of fractions. The interest behind differentiating both studies (their knowledge of fractions and their knowledge of the teaching of fractions) stems from the idea that holds that teaching math requires a specialized knowledge of this discipline and, therefore, that the fact of simply knowing the contents does not guarantee they are taught in an adequate way. This research uses a qualitative methodological approach, based on an interpretative case study. Student knowledge of fractions has been established through a questionnaire handed out to students; while their knowledge of the teaching of fractions has been established by asking them to design a sequence of activities to teach fraction-related contents. Regarding the knowledge of fractions, the study has shown that pre-service teachers hold a set of stereotyped ideas on this subject, and they also present diverse difficulties regarding specific contents. The study actually shows that the number of contents that these students have difficulties with is higher than those they master. As for knowledge of the teaching of fractions, this thesis has allowed us to determine that pre-service teachers also hold a set of stereotyped ideas in relation to what to teach and how to teach it – even when they have not yet taken any subject on the teaching of mathematics. The analysis of the relationship between the knowledge of fractions and the knowledge of the teaching of fractions has shown that pre-service teachers do not always make use of their previous knowledge on fractions when planning their teaching activities regarding this subject. The results provided by this thesis suggest the need of continuing to investigate the relationship between the knowledge pre-service teachers have of math contents and their teaching of these contents in order to improve initial teacher training in math.
