Abstract

This dissertation analyzes the concept of privacy in cyberspace, and more specifically on the Internet. From the perspective of the most important ethical theories in the field of cyberethics, Google’s Privacy Policy is analyzed to show how it addresses the privacy of user information. It is argued that the fundamental problem in understanding privacy in cyberspace is the use of a concept of privacy referred to in this investigation as "analog privacy”, one that presupposes the hindrance of use of user information and, therefore, acts as an obstacle to optimal network performance. To solve this problem a redefinition of privacy is proposed, called "digital privacy”, that protects users’ relevant information but allows the producers of the Internet, and Google, to continue to work on the construction of this social environment. From this perspective some issues raised by cyberethics on privacy are resolved. Users keep their personal information protected and Google alleviates much of the criticism it receives for its management of user data. In short, it aims to show how the issue of privacy in cyberspace is not a question of the use of information but the concept of privacy itself.
