Abstract

The concept of lifelong learning foments the current debate about the importance of learning and the importance of the learner. It also offers new perspectives in the research field of learner identity (LI) and the educational agents participation in the LI construction process. The learner identity – LI – (Coll and Falsafi, 2010), based on the socio constructivist perspective, is understood as the recognition of oneself as someone more or less able to learn in different situations throughout life. The construction of LI is conceived as a discursive process, that happens on social activities and practices through three modes: in-activity LI, on-activity LI and cross-activity LI. However, how do others participate in this process? To tackle such matters this research aimed to explore the characteristics of the individuals regarded as significant others (SO) in the construction of cross-activity LI through discursive (re) construction of their own subjective learning experiences. This objective is founded on the belief that the knowledge about the learner identity of an individual is triggered by the reflection and narration of their own subjective learning experiences, emphasising one or another experience and discussing over the relevance and importance of this experience on the general context of the learning trajectory. Based on the socio constructivist perspective, which highlights the importance of others in all the recognition processes, we believe that those who we assign as “significant others” may play a unique role in the LI construction process. This research was structured as a qualitative exploratory study focused on the topic of the significant others in the construction of the LI. The unit of analysis was the discursive (re) construction formulated by the subjects about their own subjective learning experiences (SLE). By the means of this study, a sample of 83 people were selected, all of them Brazilians residents of Salvador, with ages from 17 to 82 years old, and different educational background, from primary school to academy/professionals – constituted by people with master’s or doctorate degrees. The data collection instruments were semi-open questionnaires and interviews. Questionnaires were applied to all participants and interviews were applied to sub-samples of each subgroup (educational background x age group) aiming to probe knowledge over the SO and its relation with other elements of LI model. The data analysis included content analysis via categories of classification based on LI elements and on questionnaire and interviews elucidated data. An extended categorization and classification process was carried on by the research team, including protocol´s construction (one for each instrument) revised and adjusted through the process. We used Atlas.ti software in its version 7 on encoding. After encoded, data was submitted for a triangulation and cross verification process. This research provided different data about those considered as significant others: who are they; what is considered when attributing to the other the character of significant in LI construction; the existing relationships between the SO and other elements of the LI construction process; among other findings. Participants identified others from distinct groups as SO linking them to their most relevant socio institutional contexts, either when shared SLE happened and/or in the present time, when it was discursively rebuilt during questionnaire and interview moments. Those considered as SO were given roles such as mediation of the personal construction of learning motives; the supply of recognition acts that helped the subject to reinforce, contrast and/or transform the meanings about him or herself as a learner, and the support on aligning their personal motives to the objectives of them activities in which they were part of or yearned to be part of, favouring the attribution of meaning to it. From these results it was possible to identify two types of SO, specific and transversal and was possible to notice a difference in the impact of the actions of the SO over recognition process about oneself as a learner. Conclusively, it was considered that SOs are a great influence element on the construction of LI. Studies in this area work in favour to comprehend the construction of this identity likewise prompt means to think of educational practices that can contribute to the construction of a favourable LI, foremost, been able to recognize oneself as someone capable of keep learning throughout life.
