Abstract

Despite the architectonic value of the Hispanic Romanesque cathedrals is unquestionable, up to the date few is known about the identity, the apprenticeship and the status of their authors. Besides, the information concerning the activity and the organization of the Romanesque building workshops, their composition (sculptors, bricklayers, workers) and the professional categories (masters, officers, apprentices) has not been deeply analyzed. Nevertheless, the Hispanic case is of an extraordinary importance because of the richness and the diversity of the documentary sources (such as contracts, donation letters, epigraphic signatures, deeds, périégesis, collections of miracles and iconographic sources) in which sociological data are provided. Therefore, this research sets out a new and documented comprehension of the building of the medieval cathedral from its institutional, professional and social dimension. Some issues such as the project, the authorship, the apprenticeship and the organization of a work system become decisive. On this theoretical base, this research presents a scheme divided in three main sections: the resources, the men and the authorship. First, some aspects concerning the administrative and economical dimension of the building are analyzed: the goods and incomes management, the funding channels, the recruitment methods, the payment of wages and the procurement of the prime building materials. The second section raises some issues concerning the apprenticeship, the intellectual background and the polyvalence of the medieval artifex, as well as the organization of a medieval workshop. The aim is to review from a new perspective some consolidated clichés, for instance those of the multiple artist, the itinerant master and the secular/ecclesiastical artist. This is possible by means of the study of certain personalities as Arnau Cadell, Ramón de Bianya, Master Mateo and Master Esteban. To end, within this sociological approach to the medieval building it could not be missing the study certain topics such as the signature, the anonymity, the portrait and the mission of the patrons, who in many cases were the real “authors” of the commissions. Due to the lack of studies in the Hispanic context, in this section a special relevance to the signature and the portrait of the artist is attached, with the aim of delving into the issue of the medieval artifex status or his consideration within the society.
