Abstract

Thesis summary :

Toward to the superconducting motor: study of the interactions between a conventional stator and a superconducting rotor

The developement of high critical current HTSC (high temperature superconductors) has allowed the fabrication of devices in several areas of electromechanical engineering. In particular, HTSC have a large potential for the improvement of the efficiency of electrical motors either to susbstitute the copper windings of the rotors and for the realisation of new designs.
In this work we present the study of the behavoir of axial and radial SC motors powered by a classical copper wound armature. Magnetic field distributions arround the rotor, magnetic interaction between inductor and superconducting rotor, static torque and dinamyc mesurements are the main items investigated.
The field generated by the conventional armature can interact with SC rotors by means of the magnetization induced in the SC material. This interaction provides the force responsible for centering and levitation thus avoiding the use of conventional bearing and auxiliari fields providing magnetical bearing. We investigated this interaction in two configurations:
Radial field configuration:
The motor is built by the HTSC cylinder shaped rotor and a conventional copper wound stator. The stator core has an external diameter of 40mm, the internal hollow is of 16mm in diameter and heigh 16mm. The stator has been wound in a four poles/four phases configuration which allows the adequatre field symmetry to self-center and sustaint the rotor. No mechanical bearing has been used.
The rotor of 15,8 mm in diameter and 16mm in high has been constructed from pieces of melt textured YBCO. In order to gain homogeneity around the external area of the cylinders we have chosen multidomain pellets. In order to improve the axial stability, a disc of melt textured YBCO has been stuck on the upper face of the HTSC rotor.
When the armature is energized, the rotor levitates and it is centered by the lateral magnetic presure. It spins drived by the magnetic field. The rotor reaches a steady state synchronous with the field rotation. The motor has been tested at several frequencies up to a rotation speed of 40000 rpm. The movement of the rotor has been observed by stroboscopic lighting showing its synchronous behavoir.
In order to characterize the motor we have performed magnetic mesurements of both armature and rotor. The torque is also been measured as a funtion of the applied current and the load angle.
From the measured values of the applied magnetic field and the remanent magnetization we can estimate the torque by calculating the energy loss by hysteresis as a funtion of the slip angle of the SC rotor.

Axial field configuration
A second prototype has been constructed by using two conventional 3-phases wound inductors for an eight poles motor. The original rotor has been substituted by a glass fiber reinforced epoxi disk of a 4mm in thickness an 175 mm in diameter. Eight melt-textured YBCO discs of 4mm in high and 28 mm in diameter have been distributed around the disk. In order to perform the torque mesurements, a shaft has been stuck in the center of the rotor.
The axial flux motor behaves in a similar way than that observed in the radial flux motor. In this case the levitation is provided by the flux gradient in the gap between both inductors. The centering forces are produced by the gradient at the borders of the plane of each inductor and are more sensitive to any displacement of the trapped flux
We have performed mesurements of the torque as a funtion of the angle of displacement in a static state and a torque as a funtion of the speed and the load angle in a dinamic caracterization. The maximum torque obtained is 3 N·m. At 200 Hz the power arrives up to 1kW and the losses in the iron core can be acceptable.
