Abstract

During the last 15 years, the quality of the school system in Chile and Latin America has been questioned, because students manage neither the contents nor the minimum competences of national standardized tests. This makes possible to assume that educational institutions responsible for training teachers in both Chile and Latin America are being questioned due to their lack of capacity to model teachers who can meet most of the demands of 21st century society. This fact is what drives this doctoral work, whose purpose is to make a contribution to modernize the training of Elementary School teachers in Chile specialized in Natural Sciences, considering their contribution to be consistent with the principles of Sustainability. To achieve this purpose, it was essential to build a proposal of a model of the "Ambientalized Trainer of Teachers" coming from two main theoretical lines: Education for Sustainability and the development of Competences in University Education. Once the proposal was built, a field study was carried out. The teaching work of two university professionals who contribute to the training of teachers was observed. This information was analyzed under the light of the qualitative-interpretative-deductive paradigm of case study, analyzing the data from the speech, comparing them with the model constructed from different theoretical frameworks. The objective of this work with the teachers was to identify those aspects that they have developed of the model and those that could be enhanced. We have been able to establish a profile of the cases studied in the light of the proposed model, and the results indicate that although they develop many aspects of the model, there are some aspects that were left behind, either because they are not considered important, or by simple ignorance as sources in the construction of teachers. The purposes of continuous training, when it comes to train teachers, are centered on knowledge, on learning to know and considered too little learning about to do and learn to be. We think that the change must begin from the ultimate purpose of education, since thousands of years ago people was educated to perform a job, centuries later education was focused on training the younger generations to know a specific area. Today it has changed, and we must think of educating to form integral human beings, able to know each other, to work and live among others, and to be responsible for their lives. It all coming from the conception of Sustainable Development. We conclude this work by making a general guideline of those aspects that should be addressed in order to contribute to the modernization of the training of Elementary School Teachers specialized in Natural Sciences, from the theoretical framework proposed in the model, from its pragmatic characteristics, to its methodology, which guides and helps but does not force changes without fundaments. In order for education systems to improve, these changes must begin at the base, the professional prepared to train teachers.
