Abstract

This thesis is within the framework of the LAICOM Research Group (Laboratory of Instrumental Analysis of Communication). We have used the Method of Instrumental Analysis (Rodríguez Bravo, 2008). The object of study of this thesis is the influence of the sound environment on the communicative effectiveness. We work from the general hypothesis that the sound environment influences the communicative efficiency. The research was developed in 4 phases: theoretical development, fieldwork, experimentation and hypothesis contrasts. In the bibliographical review we have analyzed variables of the sound environment from different perspectives and we have selected the most representative ones, that is, the most structural of what we understand as sound environment according to different approaches. The variables analyzed are Intensity (acoustic), Tempo (musical) and Coherence (semantic). The variable Intensity is measured with two values, HIGH or LOW Intensity, in decibels added with respect to the natural sound pressure or noise, and we propose to work with +5dBs and with +15dBs respectively. The Tempo is measured in units of beats per minute (bpm). We propose the LOW, MEDIUM and HIGH values with ranges of 60-75dB, 90-105dB and 120-15dB respectively. The semantic dimension variable is the Coherence (values YES or NO). The communicative effectiveness is measured in relation to the achievement of the communicative objectives of the transmitter, who manipulates the environment. It has been analyzed from its most fundamental basis to develop a panel of measurement variables that we have called VEAC (Variables of Ambience Communication Efficiency). The variables are 7: sales of the advertised product, intention to try the advertised product, pleasantness, intention to return, sales in value, sales of the product related to the sound and intention to prove it. Experimental research is developed in a real setting in a restaurant with real clients. We have modified the values of the variables and we have verified that the changes on the intensity, the tempo and the coherence, influence in the panel of variables of the communicative efficiency. High intensity has a negative effect on effectiveness. The tempo gives us better results in the central zone, and worse in the extremes. Coherence has a positive effect on effectiveness. The product related to sound has not been sensitive to changes, but it is proposed to continue researching it in future lines. We conclude that the communicative effectiveness is affected by the sound environment according to the results of our experimental research.
